If the writer Delibes taught me to look, the comedian Fernán-Gómez taught me to listen.
For a few years I had the privilege of being close to him and listening to him.
Hear, among others, the story of Fernanda López, "the blonde", her great-grandmother, from whom she inherited her hair color and who was from Valdelaguna, a town next to Chinchón, mine. And Carolina Gómez, seamstress, the grandmother who took care of her childhood as Natividad López, her work, took care of mine.
We exchanged and shared coincidences in so many other stories.
Stories of survival, of absences, fears, hopes, dreams: of freedom, of "becoming someone", of being why not? Jackie Cooper, "the one from Treasure Island," and also "Salgari's novel writer."
Firm, proudly resolved in her melancholy, Fernando's voice sounded as she remembered those times, as she remembered herself.
Echoes of Baroja, Galdós, Barea... lurked in that memory.
Also, through Fernando's, I craved the voices of his grandmother and mine, Carola's distant, his mother, Maria's, the illiterate maid fond of poetry, Florentina's and the "fuck that legs" of her boyfriend.
The voice of the dreamer child, that of the meritorious with his handful of pilongas chestnuts in his pocket, that of the young man in love and in a hurry, in a hurry...
Voices in one voice.
